James is head of the retail and occupiers team in Birmingham. He is an expert in landlord and tenant matters and specialises in advising both retailers and corporates in relation to property lettings, acquisitions, disposals and portfolio management. He also has expertise in real estate investment work.
James acts for a number of retailers and advises them on all aspects of their real estate requirements. He sits on the property committee of one national retailer reporting directly to the main board.
James has represented a variety of corporations in relation to office lettings. His experience ranges from advising on regional office lettings for owner-managed businesses to negotiating lettings of city centre office space for professional services firms and financial institutions.
He advises corporates operating in a variety of sectors on lettings of warehouses and industrial buildings. James also has a range of experience of acting for institutional and private investors on the sale and purchase of a standalone and multi-let developments including retail parks, shopping centres and offices.
Since 2007, James has acted for Go Outdoors on their store expansion program, advising on all aspects of new store acquisitions and property management. He acted for the company in relation to the property aspects of the £28 million investment in the company by 3i in April 2011.
James acts for Aurum Group, trading as Mappin & Webb, Watches of Switzerland and Goldsmiths Jewellers. James is retained to advise the group on all matters connected with its property portfolio.
In 2008, James advised a private investor in the purchase of a shopping centre in the North East of England for a consideration of £32 million.
James advised on the property aspects of the purchase of The Works bookshops from administrators, Zolfo Cooper in 2008.
James is currently advising a global courier and logistics company on the pre-letting of a new 24,000 sq ft warehouse.
James has handled a number of lettings of "grade A" city centre office space and has experience of representing both major corporate occupiers and also landlords in these negotiations.
In 2004, James spent 12 months working on secondment in the in-house legal team at Vodafone.
James plays cricket for a local club and also enjoys golf and skiing. He is an experienced sailor and has sailed yachts in the Caribbean and Mediterranean as well as Brittany and the Channel Islands.
